Heat stress is measurable

Dairy cattle begin showing heat stress well below the temperature at which humans find a shed uncomfortable. Above the threshold, feed intake drops, rumination time falls, milk yield declines and conception rates suffer. In an Indian summer this is not a marginal effect — it is one of the largest controllable variables in a dairy operation.

Why wall fans are the wrong tool

Wall mounted fans move air fast and in one direction. Animals directly in front get a high-velocity blast, which causes its own stress response, while animals further down the shed get nothing at all. In a loose housing shed the animals then crowd into the served area, which defeats the purpose.

What continuous gentle air movement does

HVLS fans give the whole shed the same slow, broad air movement. That carries body heat and moisture away from the animals, holds down ammonia concentration at animal level, and keeps bedding drier, which helps udder health. Cattle settle under the covered area rather than avoiding it.

Practical points for shed installation

Fans are mounted along the shed centreline over the feeding and resting area, typically at 14 to 20 ft. In open-sided sheds the blade tip has to clear the side purlin comfortably. Corrosion protection matters more here than in most applications — powder coated structure and sealed IP55 panel enclosures are specified as standard for the ammonia environment.
